The Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA), the nation’s premier organization of outdoor media, announces three opportunities for fellowships and grants for young writers, with application deadlines quickly approaching. If you know any young writers who may benefit from these prestigious programs, please share this with your audience or reach out directly to OWAA with questions and applicants that should be considered. Educators and others involved in mentoring young writers and outdoorists may find these opportunities particularly exciting.

Recipients must be eligible undergraduate and graduate students of outdoor communications fields including print, photography, film, art or broadcasting. Bodie McDowell scholarship awards are usually given annually to three or more students. Annual distribution varies, but individual awards can range from $1,000 to $5,000.
John Madson Fellowship, deadline March 1, 2020
The John Madson Fellowship provides funding to attend educational opportunities, including the OWAA annual conference. The Fellowship is open to OWAA members and non-members.
Norm Strung Youth Writing Award, deadline March 31, 2020
OWAA, with support from Ducks Unlimited, is conducting its annual Norm Strung Youth Writing Awards, which rewards students grades 6-12 for excellence in writing poetry and prose with outdoor themes. The topic must be outdoor-oriented (hiking, camping, boating, fishing, hunting, nature, ecology, canoeing, etc.), and any prose or poetic form is acceptable. Visit the website for application details.
OWAA is experiencing a renaissance, with a renewed focus on the outdoor industry and human powered outdoor sports, in addition to its broader focus on helping elevate and connect all media in the outdoors, from the hunt and fish markets to bike, ski, trail, overlanding, paddling, and more. Currently the non-profit has more than 650 media members and nearly 130 supporting groups, with big plans for growth this year.
// We are happy to provide the media with more information and membership details.
// The 93rd annual OWAA conference will be held June 27-29, 2020, at Jay Peak Resort in Vermont. Registration is now open.
