September 14, 2020
Significant software updates and new ‘Adventure Starts Here’ brand campaign reflect Suunto’s ongoing mission to inspire and enable adventure
HELSINKI, Finland (Sept. 14, 2020) – Suunto, the global leader in sports watches, dive computers and precision instruments, releases a software update that will bring a host of new features to its award-winning Suunto 7 smartwatch and mobile app. While the Suunto 7 gets an enhanced outdoor experience, new features arrive also to Suunto 9, Suunto 5 and Suunto 3. This update, the biggest in the brand’s history, comes as part of Suunto’s new ‘Adventure Starts Here’ campaign, which reflects its ongoing mission to inspire and enable adventure for athletes of all abilities, from the city streets to the mountains.
“At Suunto, we don’t compromise when it comes to delivering the products that our users need for adventure. Whether it’s premium lifestyle smartwatch features or the outdoor functions necessary to explore the mountains, we provide watches that do it all,” says Heikki Norta, Suunto’s President. “Particularly now, with the increase in outdoor recreation in response to the pandemic, we wanted to deliver more outdoor-specific features to our products so that our community can explore with confidence and know that their watch has them covered—wherever and however they choose to get out there.”
New Features for the Suunto 7
Suunto 7 is a premium smartwatch that combines Suunto’s versatile sports expertise with the helpful smart features from Wear OS by Google™. Powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon Wear™ 3100 Platform, Suunto 7 delivers a seamless integration of Wear OS by Google and the Suunto app for an experience that supports sports and everyday life in one, streamlined solution. Since its January 2020 launch, this GPS watch has earned accolades and recognition for being the first wearable of its kind to deliver a perfect marriage between a smartwatch and a sports watch, delivering key features for sports and life, in one.
The latest features arriving to Suunto 7 make sports and outdoor adventures even easier to enjoy:
• Offline route navigation (synced from Suunto app) while tracking sports outdoors. This feature enriches the map experience on the watch -which already includes sport-specific heatmaps- making it even easier to get where you want to go, and back again.
• Battery-saving GPS mode leveraging Suunto’s FusedTrack™ algorithm. Means Suunto 7 will last longer, consuming less battery during longer workouts.
• New, low-power, ‘always-on’ sport display. For your sports, the display will always be on, showing you key data and using minimal amount of battery.
The Suunto 7 is available at www.suunto.com and select retail partners.
Mobile App Update
The Suunto app enables users to effortlessly plan routes, upload activities from their wearable and connect to partner apps like Strava and Training Peaks. This update is packed with new features, including a new home screen with easier access to the calendar, activity totals and maps. A host of additions and enhancements come to the map functionality in the app. Users can now follow their own personal heatmaps based on individual activities over the past week, month or calendar year. Additionally, users can see popular routes and starting points for routes nearby, based on the public exercises of the Suunto community, making new adventures even easier to discover.
New Features for the Suunto 9, 5 and 3
This release is the largest software update in Suunto’s history, with a number of outdoor and training features delivered via SuuntoPlus™. Some of the highlights include: a new outdoor-inspired watch face that includes sunrise/sunset times and barometric pressure (depending on model). Bearing navigation lets you set a target, get the bearing and find your way, with or without a trail. New SuuntoPlus™ features* include:

About Suunto: We stand for adventure. Pioneering exploration has been in our DNA since 1936, when Finnish orienteer Tuomas Vohlonen set out to create a more accurate compass, and subsequently invented a new method for manufacturing liquid-filled compasses. Today Suunto is at the forefront of design and innovation for sports watches, dive computers and instruments used by adventurers all over the globe.
Eighty-four years removed from our founding, we are proud that Suunto products can take a beating, but are also designed with an everyday aesthetic that reflects our Nordic identity.
