Surfing America Names USA Surf Team Travel Squad for the 2006 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships

After Two Days of Training and Evaluation in Huntington Beach, Coach PT Named 20 Athletes Who will Travel to Brazil

Huntington Beach, Calif. – March 30, 2006 –  Surfing America, the International Surfing Association (ISA) – recognized National Governing Body for Surfing in the United States, is pleased to announce the 2006 USA Surf Team travel roster of the nation’s top junior surfers.  Surfing America recently ran a special selection event in Huntington Beach to decide which athletes will represent the United States at the 2006 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, which takes place in Maresias, Brazil on May 6th – 14th.

“It's amazing to see how far the program has developed in just two short years,” said Surfing America Executive Director Mike Gerard.  “The kids selected are an outstanding group of young athletes--and we're extremely lucky to have PT working with them--he's the best Head Coach in the world.”

The trials brought out 33 of America’s brightest future stars who convened at 9th Street, also known as “Taco Bell Reef,” for two days of workouts and evaluation by Coach PT.  Many of the athletes were putting in double duty, by juggling the Team Selection with heats at the ASP WQS event simutaneously running at the HB Pier.  In addition to making the traveling squad for Brazil, USA Surf Team members Karina Petroni and Eric Geiselman surfed to victory in the ASP's Women’s 1-star and Pro Junior respectively--further validating the strength of the Surfing America development program.

The surfers participating in the selection event consisted of the 2005 "Under 18" USA Surf Team roster as well as special invitees from the ESA, NSSA, TGSA, and WSA.  However, a new team, in its entirety, will be selected after the 2006 Surfing America USA Championships this July.

“In the three years we’ve had this program back on track, the team that we selected today - on paper - is the best team we’ve had so far,”  remarked Coach PT confidently.  “Guaranteed we’re going to get some medals, whether we get the Gold or not, we’ll see.”

The USA Surf Team looks to build upon their silver (2004) and bronze (2005) medal efforts claimed in the young program’s first two ISA appearances--with four USA Surf Team athletes competing in each of the following divisions:  Boys Under 18, Boys Under 16, and Girls Under 18.  The twelve surfers above will factor into America’s point total, aiming towards a gold medal and the International Olympic Committee President’s Trophy.

“America coming back in the international limelight has made every other country better as well,”  said PT.  “While we might have our best team ever, I guarantee their’s are better too.”
