Smith Optics Introduces Interlock: the Reinvention of Interchangeable Lens Technology

KETCHUM, IDAHO (April 15TH, 2007) – Notching another first on their extensive list of optical innovations, Smith Optics is unveiling the Interlock: the re-invention of interchangeable lens technology.

Combining Smith’s expertise in Performance and Style, the Interlock offers interchangeable lens technology in street-worthy style.  Smith is introducing the Interlock in 3 different frame options – The Interlock 01, Interlock Trace and Interlock Whisper.

Built on the foundation of a patent-pending lens change system, the Interlock introduces a pair of significant developments in the field of interchangeable optics: a revolutionary lens change system and the diverse look of closed-frame styling.  To see the technology in action, visit

“It’s a double bonus.  The Interlock offers the performance aspect of multiple lens tints while the closed frame design allows us to provide extensive styles for the casual wearer,” said Eric Carlson, Smith Optics’ VP of Product Development.

The introduction of the Interlock builds on Smith’s 12-year legacy of Interchangeable sunglasses.   In 1995, Smith Optics debuted the Slider 01, the best selling interchangeable sunglass of all time.  Today their Performance Interchangeable collection includes 13 diverse frame styles including the V-Ti, which was recently named “2007 Best of Adventure Gear” by National Geographic Adventure magazine.

Activated by a simple twist of the temple arm, the Interlock’s lens change is simple to open and secure when closed.

A Grilamid TR90 frame provides the gold standard for active sunglasses, while hydrophilic Megol on the nose and temple pads ensures a comfortable non-slip fit.

The 8-base sunglasses also feature Smith Optics’ Tapered Lens Technology™ (TLT™): a precise thinning of the lens from the center to the edges that eliminates distortion commonly found in other sunglasses.  The lenses also provide 100 percent protection from harmful UVA, UVB and UVC rays.
