Marti Paradisis Wins Biggest Wave at Oakley Big Wave Awards
Paradisis adds the Biggest Wave award to his resume for his monster wave in Tasmania

Surfing Life's Oakley Big Wave Awards 2012/2013 – Marti Paradisis from Surfing Life on Vimeo.

Feb 14, 2013 – He’s taken out the gong for “Biggest Slab” and “Biggest Paddle In” in past years, but it was the top prize “Biggest Wave” in Australasian waters that he could never quite get his hands on… until this year. It was THAT clip of Marti, Sliding down the 30 ft. monster on a custom Haydenshapes Tow Board at Pedra Branca, Tasmania, Australia, that undoubtedly earnt him the night’s top honor and a cool 20K for the bank.

Originally built for Tom Carroll, the custom Haydenshapes Tow Board was constructed with over 7kg of lead imbedded throughout the core of the board along with 3 carbon rods through the center of the FutureFlex construction. In weight, the board sits at around 9.5kg – far heavier than your average 2.5kg sled. Just to add a little trivia, it was actually this same design that TC broke the world record on, being dragged behind a helicopter in NZ at over 80km per hour back in 2010 for the Discovery Channel’s Storm Surfers project.

As for the location, it was his fisherman mate that made the discovery a few years back of the giant swell in the middle of the ocean, and encouraged him and his crew to pack the jet skis and get out there.

“He sent us the footage and we were like… Yep, that’s pretty good”, said Marti Paradisis, when accepting the oversize 20K cheque on stage last night.

As one of the best big wave surfers out there, recognition like this has been a long time coming for the Tassie man who surfs 10ft waves in his backyard at Ship Stern’s like they were 4 footers in Bondi.

Marti’s winning wave was ridden on a Haydenshapes Tow Board, in a customized FutureFlex construction. Dimensions – 5’7 x 16 1/2 x 1 7/8
