The Dos and Don'ts of Crowdfunding
February 26, 2014

What: With the creation of crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, barriers to entry for entreprenuers with compellings products have been significantly reduced. Here are some guidelines and opinions to consider before launching your own crowdfunding project.
Why: To examine what it takes to successfully launch a crowdfunded campaign.
Where: Crowdfunding Secrets via
Forbes, Crowdfunding Tips via New York Times, Dos and Don'ts of Fundraising via Fast Company, Crowd Funding News via Lifehacker

Why do people support crowdfunding? You’ve got maybe 30 seconds to grab your audience's attention. And less than that to turn them off. Potential backers must be drawn to a vision. Something they want to engage with. And, as with any sales venture, the first key to success is presenting something that people want to buy: “You need to be able to tell people right away how the product is going to solve a real problem that they have.” If you can’t communicate the essence of your product and what it does in a sentence or two, you’re not going to attract significant interest from backers.

"Crowdfunding is more than holding out a hand--it's a balance of finesse and expertise. Know your stuff, be precise, and don't freak out." For first-time entrepreneurs and established businesses alike, the growth of crowdfunding platforms allows their consumers to have a role in the development of a product or service coming to life. But keep in mind that the audience has options and most people don't back projects randomly. For this, reward your backers if they have chosen to support your project and have donated. Let them feel like they are part of the team...because in a way they are!

In general, the success of a crowdfunding effort is proportionate to the amount of work put into refining the idea long before launching the campaign. "Succeeding at crowdfunding isn’t as easy as raising your hand and saying you need money. It demands strategy and stamina."

"Ideas are cheap. Run the best campaign you can."
