EVENT: 2015 SLS Nike SB World Tour Set to Land in Los Angeles

July 1, 2015

The 2015 Street League Skateboarding (SLS) Nike SB World Tour is returning to Los Angeles to kick off the season with this year’s first arena event at the Galen Center at USC on Saturday, July 11. As the premier global professional street skateboarding competition series, each Tour stop progressively determines which athletes from the elite roster make it to the SLS Nike SB Super Crown World Championship — the official street skateboarding world championship as recognized by the International Skateboarding Federation. For the coming Los Angeles stop, 25 SLS Pros, including four newly added SLS Pro Rookies, will lay it down for the $100,000 first-place cash prize and Golden Ticket that sends the winner straight to the SLS Nike SB Super Crown World Championship.

Introduced into the global program last year to give the very best non-SLS Pros a chance to earn their way into the League, this year’s SLS Nike SB Pro Open recently took place in Barcelona, Spain. In a high-stakes showdown, 30 of the world’s top non-SLS Pros battled for this biggest opportunity in competitive street skateboarding, with Evan Smith and Cody McEntire shining through to each win a place in the 2015 SLS athlete lineup. Newly installed as the official North American SLS Qualifier, the iconic Tampa Pro event in March also saw Brazilians Kelvin Hoefler and Felipe Gustavo earn their SLS Rookie status and join the Tour. For each of these four newcomers, the Los Angeles stop will be their first opportunity to shake things up and prove their position among the world’s elite street skateboarders.

As with last year, Monster Energy’s Nyjah Huston again won the 2015 SLS Nike SB Pro Open, coming in just ahead of Nike SB pro Paul Rodriguez. Can Huston again continue through the season winning every stop, or could this be the year that Rodriguez shows why he’s considered one of skateboarding’s most powerful athletes and earn his position atop the podium? Back in the game after sitting out last year’s Tour with injuries are League veterans David Gonzalez and Ryan Sheckler, both having what it takes to become World Champion. Another contender to watch is one of last year’s three Rookies and Monster Energy pro Matt Berger; after qualifying through the Pro Open, Burger secured his position in the 2014 SLS Nike SB World Tour and progressed all the way to the Super Crown to finish eighth place overall in the League. With such an unprecedented lineup of professional street skateboarders, the 2015 SLS season promises to produce some of the most exciting action in the history of the sport.

Following the Los Angeles stop, the 2015 SLS Nike SB World Tour continues on to Newark, NJ, before continuing on to Chicago, IL, for the street skateboarding competition that matters the most: the SLS Nike SB Super Crown World Championship, where the top eight elite street skateboarders will compete for the title of Champ.

SLS offers options for fans across the world to tune in and watch skateboarding’s most prestigious competition series.  Fans in the United States can watch the 2015 SLS Nike SB World Tour on FOX Sports 1 and customers of participating cable and satellite TV providers may access the live stream of the Tour stops through the FOX Sports GO app for iOS, Android, Windows and Kindle devices, as well as on desktops through International fans can catch the official live webcast exclusively on
